Here you will find a map of the county of Vestfold .
Did you ever wonder where the word 'Viking' came from?
It originates from one of the old names for the Oslo-fjord and the area
around.
The area around the fjord has been referred to as Viken, meaning
'bay' or 'inlet', and hence the people coming from the Viken area where the
Vikings. Later many other people started to be called, and also (since it
was a well established ¨'brand-name') called themselves, Vikings but
the original ones came from here.
The fjord itself was referred to as 'folda' (which means
'fold' or 'bend') in the old days and that gave name to the two counties
on each side, namely Vestfold on the west-side and Østfold on the
east-side. The old kingdom of Vestfold was the nucleus around which
the king Harald Hårfagre (Harald with the fair hair) gathered the rest
of Norway under one king in the years before 900AC.
